Stanly County residents are invited to help create a mural celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.
Every Saturday, October - November residents can visit the Stanly Arts Guild, located at 152 W. Main Street in Albemarle from 12–3 p.m. to paint a tile for the mural. No artistic experience is required. Volunteer artists from the Stanly Arts Guild will be onsite to guide participants through the tile painting process, which takes only a few minutes.
Each of the 950 tiles are 4-by‑4‑inches and will become part of an 8‑foot‑tall, 20‑foot‑wide mosaic mural depicting a bald eagle and the American flag. The designs of each tile should represent the artists’ community, its landmarks, or people.
“This project is a beautiful example of what happens when a community comes together to create something meaningful. Every tile represents a unique voice in Stanly County, and when they all come together, they form a powerful visual tribute to America’s 250th anniversary, said Renee VanHorn, Executive Director of the Stanly County Arts Council.
This community art project is a joint effort of the Stanly County Arts Council, America 250 NC Stanly County, and the Stanly Arts Guild, and is funded by a grant from the Duke Energy Foundation.
In addition to the general public, students from across Stanly County Schools and various community groups are taking part.
The completed mural will be unveiled at the Stanly County Arts Council’s Celebration of the Arts on March 20, 2027 at the Stanly County Agri Civic Center. Between April and June 2027, the mural will travel to municipalities throughout Stanly County before its permanent installation in downtown Albemarle near Liberty Garden.
