Liberty Tree in Liberty Garden
The America 250 NC Stanly County Committee will celebrate Stanly County’s Official Liberty Tree as part of Living History Day on April 18 at 12:30 p.m. at Liberty Garden in downtown Albemarle. The newly planted white oak will serve as a commemorative “Landmark” tree as part of North Carolina’s America 250 NC program.
The planting of the Liberty Tree was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the America 250 NC Stanly County Committee and the generous support of Uwharrie Bank, Hank Culp and the Culp Lumber Company, and Alice Whitley. Special appreciation is extended to Albemarle Downtown, a local nonprofit organization, for providing space within Liberty Garden for the tree’s permanent home.
The Liberty Tree at Liberty Garden is part of a statewide initiative administered by the Buncombe County America 250 Committee. The program invites communities across North Carolina to plant commemorative “Landmark” trees and contribute toward reforestation efforts in Western North Carolina. The initiative aims to recognize 100 Landmark tree plantings and support more than 25,000 new trees in reforestation projects across the region.
The America 250 NC Stanly County Committee’s project was selected alongside others from across the state and will receive an official America 250 NC commemorative plaque to be installed with the Landmark tree.
Rooted in History
Liberty Trees were iconic gathering places during the American Revolution and have served as symbols of unity, resilience, and remembrance from 1776 to the present day. Planting a Liberty Tree for America 250 honors this legacy while creating a living landmark for future generations.
Reforestation Commitment
As part of the Liberty Tree program, applicants pledge donations to one or more partnering organizations supporting reforestation in Western North Carolina. The America 250 NC Stanly County Committee donated funds directly to The American Chestnut Foundation in support of reforestation efforts in Western North Carolina.
